There's a certain art to visualising how colours and fabrics work together and Sally Ablett is a master at this. I can not describe both how exciting and humbling it is to see your designs made up into something as beautiful as a quilt. Nor can I describe the feeling of awe when I see my fabrics made up into one of Sally's lovely quilts. The amount of time and love which goes into each design is really hard to convey, but each time I receive one of these artworks I really do get butterflies in my stomach. This quilt was certainly no exception to the rule. As soon as I opened the delicate tissue paper Sally had wrapped it in, I knew this quilt had even surpassed my expectations.
The quilt is made up using 'Flying Geese' blocks and is big enough for a single bed, although you could add in some extra blocks to extend it to make it bigger if you wanted a larger size. Using a white fabric in between my 'Sound of the Sea' prints creates a beautiful contrast to show case the designs. The rectangular strip border gives the quilt a modern feel yet allows the blocks room to 'breathe' and not feel overcrowded. Using my 'Concealed Crab' print in 'Twilight Mauve' as both binding, inner and outer border helps to integrate the separate borders together whilst at the same time draws the eye outwards.
Throughout the design process when Sally sends me over ideas and mock ups of my fabrics made into quilts, I always have in mind how I want these to be heirloom pieces for you and stand the test of time. When I get to choose which of Sally's beautiful designs we are going to take forward I always struggle to choose as she comes up with several different beautiful concepts, but this time I knew straight away this design was THE ONE. I really hope you enjoy making it.
