Quick Crafts: Key Fobs

The Water Gardens Key Fobs by Cassandra Connolly

I am always on the look out for a quick, fun craft and when I came across these key fobs, I instantly knew I had to have a go at making them. It didn't take long for me to fall in love with this easy project. They are so much fun to make and take minutes to sew and put together. Warning, these are highly addictive and once you make one, you will want to make one to match every bag, purse and outfit in your wardrobe!

To make these key fobs, all you need is a sewing machine, iron, ironing board/mat, the metal key fob hardware (which can be purchased from your local craft shop) and a two strips of fabric. You may also require a pair of pliers to help you to squeeze the metal fob shut at the end as some of them can be a little stiff.

For the key fobs pictured I used cotton fabrics from my recent collection 'The Water Gardens' which I designed for Lewis and Irene. You can use any medium weight fabrics for this project, avoiding fabrics which are too heavy as they may not go through the teeth in the metal mechanism. Light weight fabrics may also tear in the mechanism and stretch knits will lose their shape.

To begin cut two strips of your chosen fabric, The measurements of this will depend on the size of your metal key fob and how long you want your key fob to be. Make sure you add a seam allowance of at least quarter of an inch to each side.

Place your two strips of fabric with the right sides facing each other and stitch along your length each side to create a tube. Using your favourite method (I use the safety pin method but you can equally use a blunt object such as a straw or knitting needle) turn your tube inside out.

Press the tube using an iron so that it is flat. Fold it in half so that your open ends are on top of each other and taking your metal key fob place these ends inside the mechanism. Using some force, press the two pieces of metal together so that they meet and hold the fabric firmly in place. Voila, you have a beautiful key fob.

These really are so simple to make and a perfect way to spruce up your keys so that you never lose them! These make great gifts, favours and even stocking fillers at Christmas. I love making a batch of these and alternating them on my own keys so that I always have something to accessorize with my outfit. I really hope you have as  much fun making these as I did. I'd love to see your fobs. Please tag me in any photos on Facebook and Instagram using #CassandraConnolly or @cass_connolly .
